Programming and Performance on a Cube-Connected Architecture
COMPCON 1988 Proceedings, 1988

This paper was presented at the 1988 COMPCON conference. Afterward, Alan Karp stood up in the audience, and announced that unless anyone could figure out a reason why not, he was declaring the authors the winners of the Karp Challenge for getting more than 200x on three real applications. No one objected, so he handed them the plaque he had made up.

This may have been the first public use of the term "scaled speedup".
